The history of acoustics in the Le Mans area
In 1992, the Le Mans Technology Transfer Centre (CTTM) was established to ensure that the knowledge generated by the University of Le Mans (LMU) was transformed into technologies that could be utilised by industry. The CTTM’s Acoustics and Vibrations Division naturally became the link to the research carried out by the University of Le Mans’ Acoustics Laboratory (LAUM), a world-renowned and leading research facility.
Acoustics has since become a field of excellence and a key priority for the region, with a significant influence and a well-established yet ever-evolving ecosystem. The creation and subsequent launch of the Le Mans Sonore biennial festival cement the recognition and integration of acoustics into the identity of the city and the region.
The Almacoustic Association
The Almacoustic association was established on 2 February 2024 with the aim of responding to the interest shown by the Le Mans Metropolitan Area, the Pays de Loire Region and the Ministry of Higher Education, in providing acoustic expertise to industry and promoting the research work of the LAUM, as well as, in the medium term, ensuring that a research and technology centre (CRT) specialising in acoustics remains based in Le Mans.

The Almacoustic team comprises eight acoustic engineers with diverse educational backgrounds and a wide range of industry experience, as well as two experienced test technicians.

Applied research and technology transfer
Almacoustic’s initiatives in the areas of innovation support, technology transfer and in-house research are based on a number of criteria:
- The benefits to the industry brought about by the innovations developed
- The potential market
- The scientific value and continuity with the research carried out by LAUM
These initiatives are therefore driven by the interest expressed by our clients and industrial partners, the LAUM’s recommendations regarding the maturity of emerging technologies, or our assessment of market needs and potential. They are generally carried out in partnership with industry and research laboratories, foremost among which is LAUM.
The aim of this project is to make new knowledge and technologies available to industry, that is to say, to commercialise them in the form of products or intellectual property, services or consultancy.
To this end, knowledge transfer and in-house research activities are accompanied by a promotional campaign aimed at raising awareness amongst local manufacturers of the resources available to support innovation at regional level, how to access them, and the specific project being led by Almacoustic and its partners
